Function
Senior AI Engineer Innovation
Shape the future of AI in banking by turning ambitious ideas into working solutions that create real value for clients and colleagues.
You & your function
Drive innovation by designing, building, and validating AI applications within a regulated banking environment. As a Senior AI Engineer, you collaborate with data scientists and business stakeholders to operationalise AI models and ensure compliance with Rabobanks standards. Together you translate business challenges into experiments. Your role is to make it happen technically: assessing feasibility, building prototypes, and iterating toward solutions that work in practice. The team works closely with the central GenAI Acceleration Office and colleagues around the world.
You will join an environment that offers autonomy, technical depth, and visible impact. You will help build the GenAI stack for the future and shape how thousands of colleagues worldwide use AI in a responsible, efficient, and enjoyable way.
Practical examples
• In your first month, you will help set up the experiment for one of our use cases within Rabobank’s secure platform. This includes configuring RAG pipelines in Databricks, running prompting workshops with business subject matter experts, and building an evaluation suite.
• Beyond project work, you will help other engineers skill up and grow into AI engineering roles. You will also be expected to think along with the next generation of AI innovations: assessing feasibility of AI solutions for business problems, facilitating the technical side of prompting workshops, and turning ideas into prototype plans.
Top responsibilities
• Build prototypes and proof-of-concepts for GenAI use cases, from RAG pipelines to agent architectures
• Configure and optimize LLM workflows, vector databases, and retrieval systems in Databricks and Azure
• Develop evaluation suites to measure solution quality, including prompt testing and output validation
• Assess technical feasibility of proposed AI solutions and advise the team on what is realistic
• Facilitate the technical side of prompting workshops with business subject matter experts
• Integrate GenAI components with existing data infrastructure and enterprise systems
• Mentor engineers and help them develop AI engineering skills
• Contribute to technical vision and knowledge sharing within the team
Requirements
You & Your Talent
Tenacious engineers who are passionate about software engineering, craftsmanship and relentless in their pursuit of impact. You finish what you start, thrive in ambiguity, adapt when priorities shift and persist through technical complexity. Your work will directly influence how our clients and colleagues experience AI-driven banking.
Required
• 5+ years in technical role (DevOps, software engineering, ML or data science)
• Proven experience in developing LLM-based applications, including prompt engineering and evaluation
• Strong hands-on expertise in Python, SQL, API development and modern AI/ML tooling
• Experience with Databricks or similar data platforms
• Experience with Azure AI services (Azure OpenAI, AI Search, Document Intelligence)
• Understanding of vector databases and RAG patterns for retrieval-augmented generation.
• Security and observability awareness: best practices for monitoring, compliance, and reliability in AI systems.
• Strong communication skills in English; Dutch is a plus
• Comfort with ambiguity, iterative problem-solving, and changing priorities
• To be considered for this position you must be located in the Netherlands and submit a cover letter with specific instruction as indicated under to apply.
Valuable additions
• Track record of working directly with non-technical stakeholders to gather requirements and align on solutions
• Knowledge of agentic frameworks, RAG architectures, or multi-agent orchestration
• Background in financial services or other regulated industries
• We care more about demonstrated ability than credentials. A relevant degree helps, but practical experience building and shipping AI solutions matters more.
To apply
We will only consider applications that include a resume and a cover letter of max 1 page covering a Statement of Exceptional Work. Describe one of your most impactful projects, ideally involving GenAI or LLM development. Address the following points:
• Describe your role and one (ideally GenAI or LLM, otherwise engineering) solution you translated from a business challenge into a prototype. What problem were you solving?
• What was the hardest technical and-or organizational challenge you faced in relation to the above question, and how did you address these?
• What was the impact of your work/prototype (measurable outcomes, validates hypotheses or lessons learned)? What would you do different next time?
Other technical work is also welcome if you have not yet worked extensively with GenAI. Please do not include proprietary or confidential information.
